Discover Wuyuan

Shangtan Village

Tucked away at the foot of the mountains in northeastern Wuyuan, Shangtan Village is a peaceful riverside village in Jiangwan Town, about 40 km from Wuyuan County.

One of the first sights to greet visitors is a magnificent thousand-year-old camphor tree at the village entrance. With a trunk about 5 meters in diameter and a canopy spreading over some 200 square meters, this ancient tree is an impressive landmark and a symbol of the village’s long history. It is also a famous movie filming location (“ I Am Not Madame Bovary”) in Wuyuan.

The Jiangwan River flows gently around Shangtan Village, its clear waters winding past traditional houses and green hills. One of the most enjoyable ways to experience the village is by bamboo raft, drifting downstream as the old houses and surrounding scenery are reflected in the shimmering water.

Filming Location

Shangtan Village is best known for its magnificent thousand-year-old camphor tree, standing beside the river at the village entrance. A favorite spot among photographers, the tree can be captured from many different angles, creating a variety of classic Wuyuan scenes.

Twenty-Nine Steps Lane was once the main route into and out of the village. After crossing Bench Bridge, visitors can follow 29 gently rising stone steps into a winding, atmospheric old lane. Lined with traditional houses featuring whitewashed walls and dark gray tiled roofs, the lane offers a glimpse into the timeless character and heritage of this ancient Huizhou village.

Shangtan is a small, peaceful village that makes a lovely stop for a few hours. Take your time to wander through its quiet lanes and enjoy the serene surroundings and beautiful riverside scenery. Don’t let a rainy day put you off—the gentle drizzle can add a touch of romance to the village, making the scenery even more atmospheric.

Walking Trail: A pleasant stone path connects Shangtan Village with its neighboring village, Xiatang. The easy riverside walk takes about 15 minutes and offers a relaxing way to enjoy the scenery along the river.
