Where is Wuyuan?

Wuyuan is a county in Jiangxi province, southeast of China. It borders the provinces of Zhejiang to the east and Anhui to the north. Wuyuan is around two hours and forty minutes away from Shanghai by direct high-speed train. Population: 376,419, Area: 2,967 square kilometers (1,146 square miles).

How to get to Wuyuan

By Air

         As for now, Wuyuan doesn’t have its own airport. If you visit from outside of China, Pudong Airport (Code: PVG) is the most convenient airport for international visitors. From Shanghai, you can take high-speed trains from Shanghai Hongqiao Train Station to Wuyuan, about three and a half hours away. Inside China, the closest airports are Jingdezhen (Code: JDZ) Airport, Huangshan Airport (Code: TXN), then you need to take trains or hire cars to get to Wuyuan.

By Train

         Wuyuan Railway Station was built in 2013 and it covers an area of 12500 squares with 4 platforms and 10 tracks. The station is part of  Hefei – Fuzhou High-Speed Line. This station is linked with Huangshan North Railway Station by high-speed trains (13 trains daily). Wuyuan train station has direct trains from Beijing (7 hours), Shanghai (3.5 hours), Huangshan (22 mins), and many other major cities. Click here to check the rate and schedules. The high-speed train ride from Shanghai to Huangshan via Wuyuan is regarded as the most scenic route in China. Train travel is also a comfortable and environmentally sustainable way to explore Wuyuan.

By Bus

         Long-distance buses are still available from nearby towns and cities. But, if you have a tight schedule, a high speed train is the preferred transportation to Wuyuan.

By car

         You can drive to Wuyuan from nearby cities. The road conditions on these highways are generally excellent, the scenery along the way is beautiful. The best thing you drive is you have the freedom to explore Wuyuan on your own term, but expect some toll charge though.

How to get around in Wuyuan

Public Transport ( Buses )

        If you are traveling on a budget or fancy getting a taste of local life, buses are the best way of getting around in Wuyuan. Wuyuan Railway Station is about 3 kilometers from central Wuyuan County. In the high season ( Spring and Fall ), there are scheduled direct buses from Wuyuan Train Station to major attractions. Other times, you can take Bus#1 and Bus#2 at the train station to the North Bus Station downtown. From there, buses will take you to almost all the villages along the three tour routes. The bus stop lies on the right side of the station’s exit.

  • Bus#1 runs from Wuyuan Railway Station to Wuyuan Couty Cultural Square downtown, passing the Wuyuan Old North Bus Station.
  • Bus#2 runs from Wuyuan Railway Station to Wuyuan Tourism Distribution Center, passing Wuyuan Old North Bus Station
  • Wuyuan Train Station bus #1 and bus #2 to North Bus Station: 2 RMB/per person
  • Schedules from North Bus Station to East Route attractions ( villages ) 6:00-17:00; North Route attractions ( villages ) 6:00-16:00; Buses are available in high season to West Route Attractions only. Bus fares start from just  5 RMB per person and run up to 20 RMB depending on where you go
  • You can get on and get off the bus at each attraction, don’t miss the last scheduled bus ( confirm with the bus driver )

Self-driving

         The attractions in Wuyuan are a bit spread out, so it’s more convenient and time-saving by driving yourself.  This way you can also reach some off-beaten area where buses are not operated, you will be rewarded with some amazing views.

Taxi, Rental car, shared ride

One can also take a taxi or share a ride to the scenic spots from the Train Station or the North Coach Station. Remember to negotiate the price with the driver before boarding a car. Many hotels and lodges will pick you up from the Train Station for free and help you to arrange private cars to tour inside Wuyuan. Make sure you confirm the arrangement in advance.

  • 4-seat sedan ( high season March and April: 400-500 RMB/per day; rest of the season: 200-300 RMB/per day )
  • 7 seat minivan: ( high season March and April: 500-700 RMB/per day; rest of the season: 300-400 RMB/per day )
  • Bicycle: ( high season March and April: 50-80 RMB/per day; rest of the season: 20-50 RMB/per day )

By Foot

        Wuyuan is one of the best eco-friendly tourist places in China. Walking or hiking in Wuyuan is very popular. Wuyuan has thousands of miles of scenic walking trails, making exploring on foot one of the best ways to see the countryside and close to nature.
